CHAPTER MEETING MINUTES

JUNE 8, 2001

QUALITY INN SOUTH, MADISON, WI

Meeting called to order at 9am by President Mike St. John. See attached attendance list.

INDUSTRY UPDATES AND NETWORKING

NASW Update/ Marc Herstand

  1. Licensure issues

- SW licensure bill at a standstill - awaiting state budget passage

- Disagreement re: SW doing AODA counseling who are not AODA certified.

There is a push for SW to obtain AODA certification but on the other hand there are
no minimum academic degree requirements for AODA counselors who are doing
family and mental health counseling. NASW asking for task force to be developed
to look at this issue.

MEMBERSHIP SHARING

Neil O'Connor reports he is now certified in Critical Incident Stress De-briefing.

UW has implemented Extendedcare.com computer system to aid discharge planners in placements. Fee based on # beds.

Marshfield working on Case Management. Anticipate HCFA survey this summer.

Meriter recently completed JCAHO survey. Areas emphasized were restraints, patient rights, and Human Resource issues.

Beaver Dam anticipating JCAHO survey this summer. Beginning plans for Memory Disorder Clinic. Active local Alzheimer's community group.

St. Mary's Madison - census high. Working on integrating UR/SW/Discharge planning

Hartford - Shared Governance concept began with nursing. Now expanding to all depts.

Stan Nielson reported JCAHO has new emphasis on volunteers including job descriptions, competencies, infection control.

Bob Miller testing system of discharge planners and UR using palm pilots.

St. Mary's Green Bay has begun using Hospitalist program, i.e. physician who is stationed within the hospital and manages care of patients throughout hospitalization including the discharge plans/paperwork. Also have stand alone cardiac cath. clinic - first hospital in WI to do this without cardiac surgery back-up.

Controversy in Green Bay and Oconomowoc re: Aurora Corp. planning to build new hospitals.

CHAPTER BUSINESS MEETING

Treasurer's Report: Current Balance $3642.98 (minus $70 for speaker and door prize)

Currently 55 paid members, 3 ex-officio members

President's Report: Mike reported on National Conference. WI chapter is one of the strongest in the country in re: to membership. Membership is issue nationwide. 19 of 29 chapters report decreased membership. Discussion re: dropping "leadership" from title of organization.

Discussion re: organization's affiliation with AHA. Does high cost support benefit of continuing affiliation?

Approx. 370 attended national conference. 4 national work groups - vision, bylaws, marketing, continuing education. Next year's conference in Albuquerque, NM, April 24-27. Members encouraged to submit abstracts for consideration as a presenter. Bob Miller presented at this conference on Blended Depts. Karen Benson has info. on collaborative case management. May contact her if need info.

National Institute of Case Management will run right after national conference next year. Brenda Johnson presented at this year's conference in Washington, DC

Members encouraged to send pertinent info. to Neil to place on website. He requests you save as "html" and e-mail to him. Neil will also work on way to confirm meeting attendance on-line.

COP Report Pat Anderson reported on statewide advisory mtg. Issues discussed were upcoming Elder Abuse and Adult Protective Services Conference coming up in Sept., Ways to Support persons on COP waiting lists, AoA Alzheimer's Demonstration Grant, and grants available from HCFA to assist states in addressing implications of Olmstead Decision. Contact Pat for more info. on these topics.

Program Report Brenda Johnson reported on plans for fall education. Topic will be Ethics and Boundaries. This will meet requirements for next education period. Plan to have national speaker, Sharon Mass. Will plan for all day conference. Will also have speaker from WI Dept. of Regulation and Licensing to address issues within our state. Date will be September 21. Will need to charge both members (nominal fee) and non-members to cover speaker expenses. See enclosed flyer.

Possible ideas for December education: Critical Incident Stress De-briefing, case management, corporate compliance

Survey Report. Brenda distributed a preliminary report on the chapter Social Work Survey re: staffing, education and salaries. 118 surveys mailed. 57 returned. Results will be available on chapter website when all data is tabulated.

 

AFTERNOON EDUCATION PROGRAM

Palliative Care - End of Life Issues. Dr. James Cleary , Director of Palliative Medicine, UW Hospital

 

NEXT MEETING: September 21, 2001 Business Meeting 8-9:30am. Education program 10am-3:30pm. Mark your calendar. Registration forms will be sent out in August.
